The latter are Dr. Wolfgang Goeldi and Dr. Ferenc Lengyel.Goeldi is a Nobel Prize winning chemist who led the research which lead to the discovery of the element lead. He is currently Director of the Max Planck Institute for Inorganic Chemistry in Stuttgart, Germany. Lengyel has been part of the academic community for more than forty years.Goeldi is the author of several books. In this particular article, he focuses on the chemistry of gold and its many uses.Goeldi goes into detail on the chemistry of gold an d also shares some details about his discovery of the element and its properties. Goeldi has been a very active part of the field since his time as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania.His description of the chemistry of gold, including examples of gold molecules, as well as sections on such subjects as boron and platinum, represent a detailed and fascinating insight into the subject. It should be an interesting read for those interested in the chemistry of gold and other related topics.The German based Goeldi is a former member of the elite Wissenschaftskolleg Group. These organizations are recognized as being of high level of quality. It is fair to say that this publication is one of the best in its category.

But we get it: the idea can be pretty daunting if youre a total beginner. Whats it like to take an online singing class, anyway? How should you prepare? Hi, my names Reina and Im a TakeLessons teacher. I offer a customized, holistic approach to learning the voice during my one-on-one sessions. In addition, I have the privilege of teaching some pretty awesome group classes online  using TakeLessons Live. Online teaching is still relatively new and I get questions every day about how it works. Id like to run through a few of the more common questions I get, and show you what to expect when you sign up for a class. So lets get started with the number one question What are the pros and cons to online classes versus in-person? The pros are that theres a lot of personal space, so sometimes if youre a new singer, it  can be kind of intimidating to sing in front of your teachers. Having that technological barrier can be super helpful, just making it more comfortable. Secondly, youre more likely to show up because you can be in your jammies, it could be raining outside, and all you have to do is turn on your device. And lastly, you can take lessons anywhere; as long as you have an internet connection and an up-to-date device, you’re good to go. The cons would be that the teacher can’t give you a hug at the end of class and tell you what a good job you did. You can get an online high five, but it’s not the same. Sometimes there can be technical difficulties so its really important to test your internet strength and to use the most up-to-date device that you have. What are the pros and cons to group classes versus private? The pros are that youre not alone. It’s really nice to know that other people can be on this journey with you, and its way cheaper [than private lessons]. The cons are that the classes are not customized, so if you’re a level thats higher or lower than the class is designed for, you may find yourself either wandering off because you get a little bit bored, or you could get frustrated because it’s just a lot of information at one time. Secondly, you cant cover as much information just because it is geared towards the general populace of the class and it’s not one-on-one. What types of students attend online classes? All types! I get young students, old students, beginner students, advanced students, hobby singers, and professionals. The classes are all-inclusive, they’re open to anyone that wants to learn, and every class is different. What types of students excel in online group classes? This answer is really easy: it’s the type of student that practices. Group classes, and all music lessons for that matter, are  intended to help you practice on your own. You’re not going to get good in one hour, a week,   or two 30-minute lessons a week. The type of student that excels in group classes is the type of student that can take notes, asks questions, and practices the information and techniques that they’ve learned. What will I learn by taking online group classes? Each group class has a different focus. Some of the classes are geared towards beginners and they might focus on basic techniques. Other classes might be more intermediate or advanced, and they’re going to focus on more difficult techniques. So be sure to read the descriptions for each class that’s offered and dont be afraid to ask questions. Can I actually get better by taking online group classes? Yes, absolutely! I have noticed no difference in growth or technique retention between my online students versus my in-studio students. If you continue to show up and you practice, youre going to see growth; easy as that! Do I need to have anything prepared? Most of the time, youre not going to need anything beyond a pen and paper for taking notes, and a bottle of water to keep you hydrated, but be sure to read the descriptions carefully. There are a few classes that may have special requirements. Will I need to sing in front of the class? Well, this depends. The teacher is never going to force you to sing if youre not comfortable, but there are classes, like the audition prep class, where its just not going to be as helpful to you if the teacher cant hear where youre at and what youre doing as youre singing your song. Some of the more intro classes are more information-based and singing live isn’t even a part of the class. If you have a specific question or concern you can always log onto the class early and speak with the teacher in the  little chat box, and just let them know a little bit about yourself. If I could offer one piece of advice what would it be? This is the easiest question by far and the answer is its that you can sing. Dont ever let anybody tell you otherwise, not even yourself! The voice instrument takes practice and patience, just like any other instrument, and if you apply yourself and work diligently, you can master your voice. Group classes are a great way to learn. For example, people avoid mentioning the word death and replace it with a genteel expression like passed away. Mild words are not likely to provoke undesirable emotions that lead to stress and awkwardness between individuals or groups. A number of example of euphemism are used in everyday life. So You Want to Become a Singer Heres How to Get There Suzy S. Private lessons? Check. Big dreams? Check! But theres one more part of the equation thats integral to become a singer and reach your career goals. Find out as Monclova, OH teacher Carrie A. explains I cant tell you how many students over the years have come to me saying they wanted to be on TV or Broadway. While those are great aspirations to go after, it really isnt the place to start to become a singer. What I have found is a great way to get started is to look for opportunities to perform right in your own community. It is seriously a huge long shot to go from never performing at all, to being chosen for some sort of reality show. Without preparation and experience, it can really be a recipe for disaster. I have performed in front on thousands of people numerous times, including once at Carnegie Hall. I, however, did not start there. I participated in lots of community theater, performed at weddings, did gigs at coffee shops, and performed at other small-scale venues before I had more distinguished opportunities. I understand the desire to perform in front of large audiences, but I strongly encourage my students to take advantage of every opportunity they have to perform, whether big or small. Every performance is an opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun. Im going to give you some suggestions that I have given to my students that have opened lots of doors for them. First, get a set list together. Whether you are a vocalist or instrumentalist, you need to have at least 10 songs prepared that you can use if someone gives you the opportunity to perform. Dont be in a hurry with this step. Look for songs that mean something to you and flow well together. Work with your music instructor to find what fits you and go with that. Second, gear up for rejection. You will be told no, probably multiple times. Dont stop until you get a yes! Im a professional singer and Ive had to deal with the same thing. Dont take it personally, just move on and get excited for when someone says yes. Third, connect with area charity organizations and ask if they need music at their next fundraiser. It will be a chance to use music to strengthen the community and possibly create more connections for future performances. Fourth, think of places you can give back and get performance experience at the same time. For example, lots of nursing homes will jump at the chance to have you come and entertain their guests. Finally, dont look down on any opportunity that comes your way. Remember in the beginning its all about getting yourself out there and letting people know you are available, and honing your skills at the same time. If that means you start by singing the national anthem at a local high school basketball game, so be it. One of my students did that very thing and now is invited by major car racing events to do the national anthem where she sings in front of 30,000 people and the event is televised. Bottom line in the beginning nothing is too small if you really want to become a singer. Enjoy where you are and build to a great future in music! A Guide to Drum Kit Maintenance How to Maintain Your Drum Kit ChaptersCleaning Your KitHow to Clean Your CymbalsRepairing a Cracked CymbalStands, Pedals and MountsBeing as their essential purpose is to be beaten, one would think that drums must be particularly rugged and, judging on how some drummers pound on them, indestructible.If you’ve ever been to a metal, acid or rock concert, you surely know that a vigorous drum solo is a big part of the show, especially if the drum is in a cage and pyrotechnics flare whenever the cymbals are hit.Nope, never been to one of those concerts... not me!!!But what happens to all of that equipment after the house lights come up, the concertgoers leave and the roadies pack it all up?And what happens to your drum kit over time, the more you play?If you are still just learning to play the drums â€" barely beating out paradiddles and only just discovering what you can play on the snare drum and the toms, perhaps taking your kit apart and cleaning it doesn’t concern you right now.Nevertheless, you will need to k now how to take proper care of your equipment so that you can enjoy making music with it for a long time to come.Before you can channel your inner John Bonham or Ginger Baker â€" or Gene Krupa, if you are more into jazz, you need to learn how to completely tear down, maintain and rebuild your kit.Let Superprof show you how to keep your drums in top shape!Once a year or so, depending on how much you play, you should tear into your set and give it a good, thorough cleaning: removing the heads, and possibly even breaking them down completely so that even the chrome will gleam when you’re finished!Here is what you should have on hand before getting started.Cleaning Agents:Goo Gonewhite spiritT-cut colour fast scratch removerColron finishing waxAutosol metal polishTools:Cordless drilla drum keya fileblade â€" a box cutter or Exacto knifemasking tapefine wire woola soft polishing clotha plastic tub (preferably with a lid)Make sure you have everything at the ready; nothing is more frustr ating than having to disengage and retrieve a needed tool or solvent!Once you have everything at the ready, it is time to disassemble your kit.After loosening the tension rods, you can remove the hoops and heads.With the drum thus open, you can remove the lugs â€" not a strictly necessary step, but if you do, you will get better, more even results when you polish the shells. Besides, it is good practice!Tip: any hardware you remove, be sure to place in the lidded container to prevent losing any piece.Your drums’ badge will be difficult to remove so you may want to simply cover it with masking tape prior to cleaning and waxing the shell. However, you should carefully cut away any extra masking tape, making sure your blade does not cut into the shell itself.If your drums are relatively new or have not seen much action yet, wiping them down with a soft cloth might be all the cleaning they need. But if, after buffing them out, you think they could do with a coat a wax, use only a smal l amount.Should the lacquer appear lacklustre, apply a coat of T-cut before applying the wax.Once the wax is dry, buff the shells again: you will be amazed at the depth of colour and shine!Don’t forget to polish the metal components while they’re not mounted!Feel free to reassemble them at any point after that. Source: Pixabay Credit: Creation GuitarHow to Clean Your CymbalsThere is a lot of conversation on this topic, with some swearing that lemon juice and vinegar work best, while others maintain that Groove Juice is the ticket.There must be some merit to the lemon juice and vinegar method, especially as Groove Juice is itself acidic.Whichever solution you prefer, be sure to work with the grooves, not from hub to edge, so you don’t compromise the tonal quality of the cymbal!Also, watch out f or the label. Whether Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl or Paiste, you will want to show that you play quality equipment, and lemon juice (or Groove Juice) could eat into those brand names.A part of the aforementioned debate is whether metal polishes such as Brasso or Wenol are actually worth the effort.As it is essential to follow the cymbal’s lathing when cleaning and polishing, some drummers report that trying to buff every bit of wax out of those minuscule furrows is an exercise in frustration.Such an accumulation of wax, over time, could really impact how your cymbals sound!However, all of the experts agree: using household cleaners such as glass cleaner or dish liquid is a definite no-no: the residue such products leave will make your cymbals look dull and affect their sound.You might know that some drummers prefer not to clean their cymbals because the patina seems to add to the tonal quality of the instrument.However, if you and your band have just landed your first gig, you would l ikely rather have shiny, polished equipment that will catch the light each time you hit the crash cymbal or the china cymbal!Bottom line: clean them but don’t polish them, and be sure to inspect them for cracks.Repairing a Cracked CymbalNow that you know how to clean cymbals, you may train your eye on the edges of your hi hats, ride cymbal and splash cymbal to look for minute cracks.They’re not there because you’re a beginner and play badly; you may simply have the wrong cymbal for the type of music you play.An extreme metal drummer should play on something sturdier than 14-inch crashes.The important thing about cracks is to catch them early and repair them quickly, and there are two ways to go about doing so.Using a file or a Dremel tool, you may simply wear away that part of the cymbal that is cracked.Granted, your Zildjian K will no longer be perfectly round, but on the other hand, you won’t have to worry about your cymbal’s sound being compromised.If you’d rather not wear into the metal, you may choose to drill just above the crack â€" but you must be very careful in selecting your bit and while drilling.You may find this tutorial most helpful in repairing your cymbals...Final note on cymbals: be sure to check your felts and sleeves. If they appear even a bit worn, be sure to replace them at once!You might be wondering how much a drum kit costs if you haven't already bout one...Once your band really takes off, you may invest in a drum rack such as Megadeth's! Source: Wikipedia Credit: Bizu LavoroStands, Pedals and MountsUnless you march in a band, most likely your kit will be mounted and your cymbals will be on stands.Although not much could go wrong with them save a height adjustment lock, wiping them down while giving them the once-over is a good idea.Of special note would be any jointed stand, such as for your snare drum, and any drum stand that has a memory lock.Also, if your cymbals are mounted on boom arms, you should pay special attentio n to them, especially if your kit is kept in a garage or shed, where moisture and humidity could affect them.Do you know all about these types of drums?What you really need to focus on is the hi hat rod and clutch assembly, and its pedal.While you’re examining pedals, your obvious next step would be the bass drum pedal(s).Your pedal needs smooth movement and quick action; it wouldn’t do to have a bearing seize up mid-play, nor would you want anything to get caught in its chain or strap!Here, common sense should prevail: you may use compressed air to clean dust from the intricate pedal parts, and lubricate your bearings with a quality bearing grease.
